John Hoeffner

Yaphank
John Hoeffner was born on Sept 23, 1923 and was the son of Lulu
and John Hoeffner. He enlisted in the Army on Jan. 20th, 1943 and
was inducted at Camp Upton Yaphank. John was sent to Camp Bonneville
in Oregon where he was put into the Quartermaster Corp. Leaving the
United States aboard the Santa Maria he arrived in Scotland and 4
months after D Day arrived in France assigned to the 9th Army.
The US Ninth Army was one of the main
U.S. Army
combat commands used during the campaign in northwest
Europe
in 1944 and 1945. It was commanded from its inception by Lieutenant
General
William
Simpson.
Hoeffner was discharged from the
Army on November 22nd, !945. He returned to Yaphank where he served
as a member of the Yaphank fire department and helped as a volunteer
at the Yaphank veterans' home.
