Welcome to the Longwood Junior High School Science Department website!

The central theme of middle level science education is to build a strong foundation of scientific inquiry skills and content knowledge that can be used when the students move on to the high school.  An emphasis is placed on designing a curriculum that builds upon what was learned at the middle school, and is both engaging and developmentally appropriate.

The 7th grade science course focuses on the scientific method, density, chemistry, and the properties of matter. The curriculum also covers motion, magnetism, forces, heat, and energy.

For 8th grade students, the Junior High School offers two courses: General Science or accelerated Earth Science, both of which culminate in a state assessment. The accelerated Earth Science course culminates in a Regents exam, while the General Science course culminates in the Intermediate Level Science Assessment.  In both courses, the curriculum focuses on Earth, space, and atmospheric science.  In the 8th grade General Science course, the students will also learn about life science topics including plant and animal physiology, reproduction, genetics, and ecology.

As New York State moves towards a new set of standards aimed at student inquiry and engineering tasks, the Junior High School science department has developed new and exciting activities that challenge our students while focusing on the development of 21st century skills. These types of lessons will ensure a smooth transition to the next generation of science standards, as well as provide for authentic scientific experiences in the classroom.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact your child’s science teacher via email, or contact the science office at 631-345-2712.
