West Middle Island Elementary Hosts First Annual Leadership Day
West Middle Island Elementary School recently held their First Annual Leadership Day to highlight student learning, as well as to share the school community’s culture.  The school-wide initiative is centered on The Seven Habits of Happy Kids with students taking leadership roles of tour guides, station managers, greeters, breakfast servers, and hosting a leadership showcase with scenes from the Princess and the Pea.

Special guests, including elected officials, business leaders, civic associations, police officers, neighboring school districts, library administrators and church representatives, visited classrooms and leadership stations including the Truth Store, Wall of Pride, Leaders in Motion, and the Barometer Station.  Students chose specific jobs, including safety patrol, bus leaders, horticulturist, and weather reporter.

“We gather today to celebrate, to share, to learn, and to discover how we can help shape the lives of our future leaders – our children,” stated West Middle Island Principal Gretchen Schaentzler.

Funded through the District’s School Climate Transformation Grant, the Leader in Me program teaches students to lead their lives with confidence and independence while working well with others to make meaningful contributions at school, home and in the community.
