Girls Basketball Wins 2019 Suffolk County Class AA ChampionshipOn Friday, February 22, the Longwood Girls Basketball team defeated Northport 45-43 earning the Suffolk County Class AA championship title for the first time since 2000.

“I can honestly say that in my 21 years working at Longwood, coaching this team has been the most rewarding,” said Head Coach James Castiglione.  “These young women empower themselves by setting goals and working together as a team to achieve and persevere.  They are truly a very special group.”

The Lions went into the championship undefeated 16-0, and the game was a nail biter until the end of the fourth quarter.  With only 13 seconds to spare, senior Tatiana Stevens’ scored and placed the top-seeded Lions ahead by two points clinching their championship win.

 “Congratulations to the team and coaches on a well-deserved success,” said Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Gina Curiale.  “Their win was a long time coming, and we are all very proud of their accomplishments so far...and we are not done yet!”

Seniors Tatiana Stevens, Kanesha Strider, and Nyia Longford will continue their athletic careers after graduation attending SUNY Plattsburgh, John Jay College, and SUNY Cortland, respectively. 

“The girls’ basketball team and their coaches have had an incredible season, and we are exceptionally proud of the remarkable accomplishments of this group,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Lonergan.  “This team represents the heart, spirit, and pride of the Longwood community.”

The Lions will play Mount Sinai in the Suffolk Championship Wednesday, February 27 at Whitman for the final game before the Long Island Class AA championship on March 9 at Farmingdale State College.
