High School Chosen to Participate in Amazon Future Engineer Program Students at Longwood High School interested in pursuing a career in Computer Science are getting a boost from Amazon.  Longwood Central School District is pleased to announce that the high school is one of only five Long Island schools chosen to participate in Amazon's Future Engineer (AFE) Pathway.

Offered in the 2019-2020 academic year with Amazon and Edhesive, the initiative provides students with access to Advanced Placement Computer Science courses, college scholarships and paid AFE internships in software engineering.

“Improving and increasing access to STEAM education and Computer Science is an ongoing focus for our district,” said Longwood Superintendent Dr. Michael R. Lonergan.  “This program will provide our future generation of innovators with the tools necessary for a rapidly changing technological world.”

The initiative will expand access to high caliber preparatory courses, curricular resources, and programs to prepare and propel high school students forward in their pursuit of AP Computer Science education.

Amazon will provide the coursework for AP Computer Science classes through a partnership with AWS Educate and Edhesive. Courses include a college-level introduction to computer science principles, and a programming class in Java, a popular in-demand programming language.

Program highlights include professional development for identified staff to teach three computer science courses (two are AP courses) and full curriculum for all three courses aligning with the high school’s career academies and pathways. All students will have access to cloud computing, web design, and game design.  Students will have the opportunity to earn specialized AWS certifications with current partners Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, Harvard University, and Stanford University.

Students work closely with an Amazon employee technical mentor and manager, as well as their fellow AFE interns, to innovate and create on behalf of Amazon customers. AFE Interns gain experience working with new, cutting-edge technologies and tools unique to Amazon and have opportunities to learn from and network with Amazon leaders, attend great events, and create lasting bonds.

Additionally, Amazon is supporting students who pursue a Computer Science major in college with $10,000 scholarships.
