Students Donate Sweet Treats for Troops

Troops deployed overseas will enjoy sweet treats thanks to the generosity of the school community at Longwood Central School District.

Through the collective efforts of students and staff at Longwood Junior High School, more than 350 pounds of candy was delivered to Soldiers Angels, Treats for Troops Program.  The organization distributes candy to deployed service members as well as to veterans in VA Hospitals across the country.  Excess Halloween candy was donated to the Long Island Chapter of Blue Star Moms.

“This compassionate gesture serves as a reminder of the generosity of our school community,” said Mr. Gallagher, Junior High School Chairperson for Art, FCS, and Music.  “The unselfish actions of our building will help put a smile on the faces of those who sacrificed so much for our nation.”

Students organized the candy in Ziploc bags and packed them into recycled boxes for delivery.

“The troops go away from their families for a long time to help other people, so it made me happy to help them,” said seventh-grader Ayobami Adebayo.

Thoughts of our veterans spanned the district as middle school students in Ms. MacKenzie and Ms. O’Connor’s class assembled more than 25 care packages, containing Halloween candy, t-shirts, sweatpants, hats, gloves, and toiletries, for delivery to The Veterans Place in Yaphank, and West Middle Island Elementary School students collected 400 pounds of candy for Treats for the Troops.
