West Middle Island Entrepreneurs Make a Deal at Shark Tank Jr.On Wednesday, June 13, West Middle Island (WMI) Elementary School fourth-grade entrepreneurs hosted their version of the ABC show Shark Tank, a reality show where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to investors hoping they will invest in their design.

Through the Shark Tank project, students demonstrated the skills necessary to develop a business as an entrepreneur utilizing scientific methods, persuasive writing, and presentation skills.

The students were required to follow appropriate timelines, pitch guidelines, create business plans, and understand grading rubrics.  The students also extensively researched the cost of materials and competitors.  As a culminating activity, the students worked collaboratively to persuade the “sharks” to invest in their respective companies.

Student inventions included:
•    Slip Grip prevents blisters when using the monkey bars.
•    Mopper helps you clean while walking.
•    Ninja Flopper prevents noisy flip-flops.
•    Comfy & Cozy prevents blisters and increases comfort while wearing sneakers.
•    Dropper Stopper stops your backpack from getting wet.
•    Solar on the Go Backpack uses solar to charge phones.

All designs received numerous offers from the “sharks” including Longwood Board of Education Vice President Paul Infranco, Board Member David Pfister, WMI Literacy Coach Carol Serrano, and Public Relations Specialist Pam Donovan.
